Staging Solutions to a National Debate
In the aftermath of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., playwright Caridad Svich put out a call to theater artists to submit short plays related to the intensifying debate over gun control. The instructions were rather demanding—not only did the pieces have to be between three and seven minutes long, but they had to be completed and submitted in less than 10 days. Chiori Miyagawa is collaborating with director Tamilla Woodard, exploring the subject of Double Suicide. This work-in-progress is partially inspired by renowned psychologist Dr. Thomas Joiner's book, Myths About Suicide.

This Lingering Life takes place in someplace like the U.S., where we meet a woman with tragic hair, feudal warriors, a mother whose son was kidnapped, a blind beggar, dead lovers, a pathetic old man in love with a teenager, a boy whose father is an arrow, and other sentient beings. It all happens in the present time, except when it happens in an ancient era.

New Dramatists presents the 10th annual PlayTime, a 2-week developmental lab for five plays-in-progress designed to give playwrights the time and space needed to explore, workshop, rethink, and revise ambitious new work in a collaborative company of directors, actors, other writers and New Dramatists staff. PlayTime offers our writers one of the most extended, intensive developmental processes available within our year-round artistic programming. This year’s writers are Tanya Barfield, Marcus Gardley, Rob Handel, Dan LeFranc, and Chiori Miyagawa.
