2006 -- 2013Jason Grote is a playwright and television writer based in Los Angeles. His plays include 1001, Civilization (all you can eat), Maria/Stuart, Hamilton Township, Darwin’s Challenge, Box Americana, and This Storm Is What We Call Progress. He wrote and co-produced two episodes in season one of "Smash" and is currently a writer on "Mad Men." Current projects include a commission from ACT/Seattle about Stalin and Shostakovich; Scheherazade, a musical adaptation of 1001 with composer Marisa Michelson; and various film and television projects. A resident playwright at New Dramatists since 2006, his work has been produced and developed at The Museum of Modern Art, The Sundance Theatre Lab, Playwrights Horizons, The O’Neill Theater Center, The Denver Center Theatre Company, New York Theatre Workshop, Portland Center Stage, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center, Page 73 Productions, Ensemble Studio Theatre, Voices of Change – Festival for New American Plays (Theater Bielefeld, Germany), Clubbed Thumb, The Civilians, The Foundry, MASS MoCA, The Luminato Festival, TheatreWorks, The French Institute's Alliance Francaise/PS 122, The Flea, Soho Rep, The Lark, The Glej Theater (Slovenia), Salvage Vanguard, HERE, The Contemporary American Theater Festival, Baltimore CenterStage, Collaboraction, Theatre @ Boston Court, and elsewhere. He has also collaborated in various capacities with The Wooster Group, Radiohole, Maureen Towey, and David Levine. He was the 2006 P73 Playwriting Fellow. His plays have been published by Samuel French and Playscripts Inc., and in The Back Stage Book of New American Short Plays 2005 (edited by Craig Lucas). His nonfiction writing has appeared in The Los Angeles Times, American Theater, The Brooklyn Rail, and the program of The Royal Shakespeare Company, and his short fiction is included in the Significant Objects anthology from Fantagraphics, edited by Joshua Glenn and Rob Walker. He occasionally blogs at Hilobrow.com, voted one of Time magazine’s top blogs of 2010.

Mad Habits
Jason is proud to have joined the writing staff for season six of "Mad Men." His collaboration with director/conceptual artist David Levine, HABIT, opens PS 122 and The French Institute's Alliance Française's Crossing The Line Festival on September 15. He also wrote a program note for The Wooster Group's collaboration with The Royal Shakespeare Company on Troilus & Cressida.
Smashing Civilization
Jason Grote's play Civilization (all you can eat) opens at Woolly Mammoth Theater February 13 and Salvage Vanguard Theater February 16. NBC's Broadway-themed drama "Smash," for which he writes, premieres February 6.
Buzz
Monday, November 7, Jason starts shooting his episode of NBC's mid-season replacement "Smash," created by Theresa Rebeck. Shooting begins with guest star Bernadette Peters singing "Rose's Turn" in a role that Jason got to create! In addition to producing this episode, Jason is casting his play Civilization (all you can eat) at Woolly Mammoth, working on a couple of original TV ideas, reading William T. Vollman's Europe Central as research for a commission from ACT, being a dad to a 16-month-old, and very occasionally occupying Wall Street.
