Support for Writers with Children: Announcing The Lilly-Ruhl Fund

After winning the Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award, alumna Sarah Ruhl made a gift of $5,000 to New Dramatists to set up a child care reimbursement fund for playwrights. In January, 2017, with the support of alumna, Julia Jordan, The Lilly Awards Foundation’s Board of Directors matched Sarah's gift with an additional $5,000, and in so doing, created the Lilly-Ruhl Fund. THREE PLAYWRIGHTS SELECTED FOR THE 2016-2018 NEW DRAMATISTS VAN LIER PLAYWRITING FELLOWSHIP

Hammaad Chaudry, Keelay Gipson, and Monet Hurst-Mendoza have each won an Edward and Sally Van Lier Playwriting Fellowship at New Dramatists. Each fellow will receive a cash grant of $10,000 per fellow per year for two years, ($20,000 per fellow for the cycle); a two-year residency (July 2016-June 2018) at New Dramatists, which includes access to the Playwrights Lab programs; a profile page on the New Dramatists website, the use of the building as a place to work and conduct meetings, a vibrant community of diverse playwrights; individual mentorship matched with each Fellow from New Dramatists resident company of playwrights; a Van Lier Fellow Soiree introducing their work to field colleagues in the first year of their fellowships; and a “festivalized” presentation of their work within the second-year. New Dramatists Announces Seven New Playwrights Join the Resident Playwright Company

New Dramatists, an artistic home and developmental laboratory for professional playwrights, is proud to announce the addition of seven writers to its illustrious, dynamic resident playwright company: Sam Chanse, Kate Cortesi, Aurin Squire, Lloyd Suh, Mfoniso Udofia, Ken Urban and Brian Watkins. They will be in-residence through 2023. These supremely talented theatre artists were selected by a seven-person committee of New Dramatists current residents, alumni, and outside theatre professionals from 359 applicants after undergoing a highly competitive, nine-month consensus based evaluation process. New Dramatists will kick off their seven-year residencies with an evening of readings and celebration at the annual New Playwright Welcome in the fall. Read More

New Dramatists, an artistic home and developmental laboratory for professional playwrights is proud to announce the addition of eight writers to New Dramatists’ company. This talented group of theatre artists was selected by a seven-person committee of New Dramatists playwrights, alumni, and outside theatre professionals from 504 applicants after undergoing a highly competitive, nine-month evaluation process. The playwrights are: Eric Dufault, Matthew Freeman, Aditi Brennan Kapil, Basil Kreimendahl, Matthew Paul Olmos, christopher oscar peña, Lynn Rosen, and A. Zell Williams. They will be in-residence through 2021. New Dramatists will kick off their seven-year residencies with an evening of readings and celebration on Monday, September 8, 2014. Read More

Emily Morse is Named the New Artistic Director of New Dramatists

New Dramatists, Tony® Honor recipient and the nation's premiere playwright development workshop, announces that Emily Morse will assume the position of Artistic Director beginning in July. Morse, on staff at New Dramatists since 2001 and currently serving as Director of Artistic Development, assumes the position from Todd London who leaves New Dramatists after eighteen years to become the Executive Director/Professor of Drama at the University of Washington where he’ll oversee undergraduate, MFA and PhD programs, training and productions. New Dramatists Awarded $350,000 from the Rosin Fund of the Scherman Foundation for NEW PLAYS/MORE WAYS
New Dramatists, the nation’s longest-running community of playwrights, was awarded a three-year, $350,000 grant from the Scherman Foundation’s Katharine S. and Axel G. Rosin Fund to support NEW PLAYS/MORE WAYS, a comprehensive initiative that deepens the organization’s support of a resident company of 50 outstanding playwrights. NEW PLAYS/MORE WAYS extends and enhances the writers’ programming of week-long creative development sessions through the Creativity Fund, a highly-successful initiative that places writers at the center of the new work development process. The Rosin-Fund sponsored project also underwrites New Dramatists’ launch of a Virtual Home, enabling writer access to New Dramatists-sponsored technology tools, from anywhere, at any time. Read More
NEW DRAMATISTS 65TH ANNUAL SPRING LUNCHEON TO HONOR SUSAN STROMAN
New Dramatists, Tony® Honor recipient and the nation's premiere playwright development workshop, proudly announces that we will honor five-time Tony Award winning director/choreographer Susan Stroman with our 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award at the 65th Annual Spring Luncheon tribute, to be held Thursday, May 22 at the New York Marriott Marquis. Among the Stroman collaborators offering tributes will be Tony Award winner Boyd Gaines and New York City Ballet’s Tiler Peck performing a selection from Little Dancer, Taylor Mac performing a selection from The Last Two People on Earth, Tony nominee Marin Mazzie performing from Bullets Over Broadway; and Contact collaborator John Weidman, and cast members from The Scottsboro Boys.
