Terra Firma by Barbara Hammond
Mar 20 2015 - 3:00pm
A retired army major claims an abandoned aircraft platform in international waters off the coast of Essex as his own sovereign nation, plants his flag, declares his wife Princess and their motto E Mare Libertas!
At the time he declared: "I think everybody knows we're nice people really but they know full well that if they try and invade us there will be a bloodbath."
This real-life event and its aftermath inspired Barbara Hammond's new play, a commission for the Royal Court Theatre. You are invited to a first glimpse at this work-in-progress as it attempts to answer the questions: What is a nation? Who is the enemy? Freedom at what price?
