In a rare moment of confusion, Ellen, a liberal New Yorker, agrees to go on a volunteer trip. Soon she's in the middle of rural Kentucky being housed and fed by extreme fundamentalist Christians. Straddling the red-state/blue-state divide, Gather at the River wryly examines the American yearning for a faith-based life.
